• Driveway placements — almost never require a permit in Utah. This is the case across Salt Lake City, Sandy, Murray, West Jordan, Draper, Layton, Provo, and most other cities.
• Street / right-of-way placements — often require an encroachment permit from the city. Requirements differ by city. Salt Lake City, for example, has specific rules about visibility aids and allowable durations for street placement.

Step 4 — Plan for weight, not just volume

The most common mistake Utah residents make when renting a dumpster is thinking only about how full it looks — not how much it weighs. Your standard allowance is 1 ton (2,000 lbs). Here is how fast common Utah project materials add up:

• Asphalt shingles: 200–350 lbs per roofing square. A 2,000 sq ft single-layer roof can hit 4,000–7,000 lbs.
